CHIANTI: 
The Chianti region Is famous for its excellent wine, which is of guaranteed and controlled designation of origin (DOCG). The vineyards which produce it extend well beyond the boundaries of the geographical Chianti territory to include Monte Albano south of Pistoia, the hills in the southern part of the province of Pisa, the Mugello district, the Pratomagno slopes beside the Arno, the neighborhood of Arezzo, the west side of the Chiana VaIley and the neighborhood of Montepulciano, the south of the Siena district around Montalcino, the Montagnola district west of Siena and the neighborhood of San Gimignano. The central area, which produces Chianti Classico (including the towns which set up the Chianti League in the 13C), coincides almost exactly with the geographical region from which the wìne takes Its name.

When the wars that took piace in the Dark Ages between the various fèudal landowners in the countryside finally came to an end, local commercial trading began to develop in the area again, especially around the main castles, which soon became important centres of commerce or market places (mercatale). This name can often be found in central Tuscany, in fact, apart from the market at Greve in Chianti , we can also find a Mercatale in the Bisenzio Valley, another in the Pesa Valley and another again in the Upper Arno Valley. The Greve in Chianti market was originally just a square situated between two streams, the Greve and its tributary that flowed down from Montefioralle. The choice of its position was not sirnply left to chance: not only did it stand on the roads that linked the Greve and the Arno Valleys, it was also very dose to the castles of Montefioralle, Convertoie and Uzzano, that stood on the surrounding hills. By the beginning of the 15th century, when all the cultivation around the mansions of the great lords had transformed the harsh hills of the Chianti into gardens, the “vermilion wine” was already famous; this wine could be bought at the “Mercatale a Grieve” and was one of the most expensive in the area: the “wine that I casked at Vingnamaggio”, as Amedeo Gherardini

Certainly there was no love between the Gherardinis of Montagliari Castle and the Firidoifis of Panzano Castie... far from it. Between the two of them blood run... Two Gherardini scions killed Antonio, brothcr of Luca di Ttto de’ Firidolfi. After this assassination. Luca swore to take revenge himself on iss rivals, as it was common use, but the two murderers, followed “... for villages and woods”, runaway from Panzano and found shelter in Naples. Luca de’ Firidolfi, who had to take care of other matters. had to postpone his plan, he effectively carried out four years later. It was 1346 when he knew Gherardini,
the one still in life (because one of them had died for other reasons in Napies). was lunching in Santa Margherita a Montici, near Florence. He then mustered in a flash few men, armed them and all together rushed over there: they stormed in and caught Gherardini. “We were over him and sent him to Paradise ..“ as Luca wrote in his ‘Ricordanze”. This is an old story all young of the association “Il Giardino” of Panzano recall: they just change the end, sometimes, for the show sake. Once Gherardini is decapitated. another time hanged.ù but always after a funny summary trial where the judges are the owners of Chianti castles wearing sumptuous period costumes.

In the second half of the l5th century Lorenzo de’ Medici naturally ìncluded Greve among the famous markets he describes in his “Nencia da Barberino”; the well-known maps of the period, drawn up for the Captains of the Guelph Faction, show the rnarket square as it was then, built on a square, as it was still to remain for over a century (when it became triangular): the maps clearly show its position between the two streams, the great well in the centre, the church at the top of the four-sided square and the loggias facing onto the two main sides. We can already see the sites of the houses, originally built only on the side of the hill, but which were eventually to surround the entire perimeter of the square to give it the aspect we can admire today.
